Flights of Fancy, 2002. Brings pages to life with dramatic dangling illustrations that swing into action when the book opened. The 6 ½" square concertina structure extends over three feet and employs more than 60 stencils to create the text, borders and fanciful creatures. The message is a call to soar above obstacles that limit the human spirit. Custom-crafted clam shell box by Carolyn Chadwick. 15 copies. $575.

 

The Forgotten Closet , 1996  What’s behind the closet door and why is everyone afraid to find out? The answer is revealed in a single-sheet structure that opens to create several pages of text and a 3-D look-inside closet. Photocopied on cardstock. 4 1/2”H x 2 3/4”W. Open edition. $20.

Grandma's Closet, 1991. Sneak a peek through-the-keyhole into Grandma's tightly locked secret closet of treasures. Six-panel tunnel book of hand-colored photocopied images on Folio stock. Text and additional images on side hinges. 8¼"H x 5¼"W. 30 copies. $275.

 

A Great Lunch, 1996  A graphic thank-you from a not-too-grateful guest. A single sheet of paper is cut and folded into a four-panel tunnel book. Offset printed with hand coloring and red fabric lips added. 2 1/2”H x 3”W, opens to 9"D. 40 copies. $125.

Horrorosa Noticia, 1993  Miniature calaveras (skull or skeleton) drawings based on Mexican woodcuts. Concertina structure with Spanish text on one side and English  on the other.  Photocopied on Fabriano paper. 3/4“ H x 1 3/4W”, opens to 26”L. Black plastic sarcophagus. 65 copies. $35.

 

Iowa Jaunt, 2004. A blue kinda guy explores a red kinda state and discovers an unexpected connection. Single sheet, photocopied, pop-up book with stenciling and highlighting added. 4¼"H x 2¾"W. $10.

Stand and Deliver: Engineering Sculpture into a Book Format, 2003. Upon opening, a pop-up explodes from the center, and two booklets pushed out from each side. The Show Booklet includes an introduction, background stories, and an interactive CD. The Gallery Booklet includes color photos and short descriptions for all 52 books in the show. Julie Sadler designed the CD that features additional photographs, artist statements, sound effects, and several short movie clips. Kyle Olman was the paper engineer. 6"H x 7"W. 950 copies. $35.

Star Book, 2005. Unfolding petal pages create a celestial pathway for a text describing a stellar friendship. Gocco printed on Environment Parchment with stickers, sequins, brass charms, buttons, brads, glow-in-the-dark stick-ons, lenticular panels, foamy shapes, puffed fabric, and stamped images added. Hardcover with eight unfolding double-page spreads. 2¾" square. Clamshell box. 32 copies. $530.

Suzie Sez, 1993  Suzie’s doll head tops a concertina strip of advice panels and punched paper figures. Stamped text on multi-colored papers inside a 2” cube box with even more advice on the sides. 33 copies. $150.

Tags, 1991  Some thoughts on the process of evaluating new acquaintances. Stencil-stamped sales tags lavishly decorated with sequins, stickers and other great stuff discovered in the forgotten corners of the studio. Key chain binding. Two-piece box. 2 3/4”H x 1 3/4”W. 25 copies. $300.

Tied for Success, 2001 A tie rack masquerading as a book describes a fight for individuality in the midst of corporate conformity. Twenty-one festive ties decorate the box, cover and pages. Gocco printed in 14 colors with collage, rubber stamping, stenciling, punching, sponging, embossing and thermography added. Leatherette covers and comb binding. Tunnel O’ Love, 1994  A romantic voyage of discovery through a six-panel tunnel book. Text jumps from on heart-packed panel to the next.   Additional text on back cover.  Color copied and mounted on cardstock with Fabriano paper hinges.  4”H x 5”W. 60 copies. $175.

Turtle Talk, 2001 Ever wonder what a turtle has to say? This combination book/box opens to reveal all the answers delivered by a bobbing-head handmade miniature turtle from Mexico. Gocco printed and silkscreened using gocco stencils in eight colors on acid-free Stonehedge paper. 1 1/2" cube unfolds to 4 1/2" X 7" sheet. 52 copies. $135.

Twisted, 1992  Attempts to twist an individual to conform turn to a confirmation of individual expression. Bound so pages automatically advance as covers are twisted. Gocco printed on recycled paper. 3” square. 50 copies. $700.

 

Voces de Mexico (Voices of Mexico), 2000. Sayings by Mexican luminaries on art, education, life, death and politics are recorded on a flexagon that rotates out from the center until returning to the beginning. In Spanish with English translation. 5" square. 1,000 copies. $35.

Wanted Posters, 2002. Miniature posters soliciting help addressing social ills fit in pocket pages that are offset printed on three colors of 8½" x 11" cardstock. The parts are cut out and exchanged to create each multi-colored book. 2 ¾"H x 2"W. Open Edition. $15

Show Catalogs & Ephemera
Design, Construct, Engage, 2003. The catalog is a 16-page single-sheet book that can also be opened to a 34"H x 22"W poster. Inside the catalog there is an introduction by Gabrielle Fox and four essays that include John Cutrone’s straight-from-the-gut approach to design, Alisa Golden’s view of the production process as a personal journey, and Joe D’Ambrosio discovery that aberration is an effective way to engage the reader. There is also an artist statement and information on the sponsoring venues. Running along the bottom of each page are color pictures of the books in the show, construction shots and personal snapshots of the artist. The poster features additional color book photos and a complete list of all 60 books in the exhibition.
