A flexagon is a folded paper structure that
flexes and unfolds to reveal many different faces.
Flexagons are usually divided into two groups:
- two-dimensional or flat flexagons that flex
to reveal multiple faces, and
- three-dimensional or rotating rings of tetrahedra
or polyhedra that rotate through their centers, sometimes called
flexahedrons.
The fun part of flexagons is discovering
the hidden faces and learning to operate them smoothly and with confidence.
Like all book structures, flexagons can be used to strong or weak
effect. A flexagon is the book equivalent of the dissolve shot in
movies. They are powerful at showing how one image melds into another.
In "Four Seasons" the same tree trunk undergoes
seasonal changes.
In "Album" I go from a baby, to a young boy,
Vietnam soldier, clown, and finally, a happy partner in a gay union.
