The Book as Picture: Handmade Books by Paul Johnson
, Exhibtion, Katonah Village Library

A dozen handmade pop-up books by paper engineer and book artist Paul John explode off the page with colorful illustrations, thoughtful text, and playful humor. From tiny doorways to expanding villagescapes, constructed canyons, boxed gardens, text-laden houses, flights of fancy, and unfolding topiaries, the artist packs vision and imagination into each book. Come and see how pages can spring to life through the creative imagination of a master artist.

The Book as Picture: The Permanently Open Page
, Workshop for book artists, White Plains

Construct a three-dimensional book that hangs on the wall instead of sitting on a shelf. Class begins with a look at books Paul has designed to display as reliefs or hung as pictures. Participants make 3D models using these techniques. Finally, we incorporate several of these models into a single book and experiment with different paper-engineering techniques (including pop-up toy theatre forms) for use within the single page.

A Box of Fireworks
: Add a Splash of Spice, Snap, and Sizzle to Your Handmade Books, Workshop for book artists, White Plains

No one can wrest more surprise from a few pieces of paper than Paul Johnson can. This class starts with participants making a paper origami box. Then you'll construct an extending pop-up book that 'grows' out of the box. As you lift the book, pages pop out from the sides like a pyrotechnic display! It's great fun to make and, amazingly, requires only paper, scissors and glue. A workshop of terrific fun.

Sunday, April 9
Making Movable Editions
- multiple section books: Learn How to Share Your Ideas in Imaginative and Innovative Ways, Workshop for book artists, White Plains,

The workshop begins by constructing a classic 180° foundation form as a template and exploring the many themes - boxes, houses, boats, flying craft - that can be processed from it. We will investigate 3-D designs as flat shapes that can be photo-copied, cut out and assembled as an editioned movable book. As Paul Johnson says, 'This way, you can keep your original pop-up and give copies to friends as well!'.
